What is REIKI?

reikani.gif (5214 bytes)

"Reiki" is actually a composite of two Japanese words, which together mean "Universal Life Force Energy."

Dr. Mikao Usui of Japan in the late nineteenth century revived an ancient system, thought to be an ancestor of what is known today as the "Medicine Buddha," of using a subtle energy to help facilitate healing. It is known as the Universal Life Force. ULF, for short, is not quite electromagnetic but is something similar, and of a much higher vibrational frequency than the electromagnetic field of this planet which we call Earth, our home. It is the "stuff" which comprises all life: Universal Life Force Energy is perfect, unconditional love.

When received in its’ pure form, Reiki feels wonderful. Not only does it relax, in an astonishing number of instances, healing of the physical, emotional, mental and/or spiritual takes place. Although in recent years there are many ongoing scientific investigations to discover the exact nature of Reiki (ULF) and why it works, there is no known current technology to "prove" Reiki. It just works. That’s all.

Albert Einstein once said, "Science will someday discover what faith has always known." Science is presently finding much evidence that so-called "supernatural" or "occult" is nothing more than natural phenomena previously and to a large extent still not definable through technology. Reiki and other energy healing modalities fall into this category.

A practitioner of Reiki can be anyone with pure intention and a good heart wishing to serve, who has received certain attunements to clear energy blockages and open the channels for this particular form of energy to flow freely at will through his or her body, either for the self or for others. When giving a treatment, (s)he is not using his or her own energy but, rather, the boundless energy of the All that is.

As well, a Reiki practitioner gives service to the ideals and principals set forth by Dr. Usui, which are designed to bring forth peace, joy and harmony in ones’ own being and, by extension, ultimately to all life.

The client generally experiences deep relaxation and removal of stress. Often profound feelings are released, yet there are no "predictables." Each person is unique and has our own experience. Healing very often occurs, depending on the nature of the person’s own life path and on the ability of the person to (unconsciously) use the energy for this purpose.

As with any form of treatment, the success is dependent entirely on whether or not each person accepts responsibility for our healing and takes an active part in it by making a conscious, active commitment to learn and to actively, fully incorporate into our lives that learning.

There are those who have turned away from this remarkable energy form because the world of "Reiki" has unfortunately become, for some members and associations, very political, with struggles for power and money. Yet Reiki in its purest form concerns itself with nothing of those human foibles: Reiki, when used as originally intended, is healing energy. Period. Anyone is able to access this remarkable gift from Spirit to achieve and maintain wholeness in his or her life.

Please remember, energy work by any name can be a very useful and powerful ADDITION to medical diagnosis and treatment; but is NOT A SUBSTITUTE.FOR YOUR DOCTOR’S CARE. More important, energy balancing is a powerful tool for prevention of problems occurring in the first place.

The Reiki Symbols

As are many symbols from time immemorial, all symbols used in Reiki are considered sacred and must be used appropriately. It is useful to invoke them (silently) before beginning a Reiki treatment, either through drawing them with your hand in the air or on the body of your client or yourself, or through tracing them on the roof of your mouth with your tongue. Some people are able to simply see them in their mind’s eye and this works too. My understanding is that a field of energy is set up through our intent, no matter what paradigm we are working with in any field of endeavor. In that sense, Reiki is no different: an electromagnetic field of particular frequency is set up according to the symbol used. Mysterious? You bet! But only because technology hasn’t to date been able (to my knowledge) to record such subtle fields. Remember the days before science was aware of microcurrents? Your grandparents do.

There are many who believe the symbols are best not shown to people who are not Reiki initiates, for the simple reason these people may not understand. It is within the realm of possibility the symbols could be misused. Having said that however, it is also believed felt that in the new energies of the present time the symbols and, therefore, those who use them are guarded by benevolent, unseen forces so that no harm can come. Use your common sense. Some people paint or draw the symbols on a wall before painting, to energize a room with the Universal Life Force Energy. Some place the symbols under the pillow on their bed. Ways of using the symbols are endless! You will have fun discovering your own ways. Please read about the Reiki symbols in more than one Reiki book or web site, and, after being attuned, experiment with the various ones. You will be surprised at the differences you will experience in them.

Meditate as much as possible on the symbols. Exploring their energy and their use is both fun and useful. It seems they set up a specific force field, magnetic or electromagnetic or something more subtle, which can be recognized by sensitives and by animals and small children.

It is important, because of expediency, to memorize the symbols if you plan to use them in your daily living and for healing work with any or all life forms. Once you witness their effectiveness, you may well find yourself using them many times a day!! Symbols can be activated though mental process of visualizing, or by tracing them either in the air or on the body itself, or by drawing them on the roof of the mouth with the tongue. Some draw the symbols on each hand, clapping the hands together. It is my belief that, in the end, Intent is all that matters.

There are a few things to remember in any activity:

  1. Intent
  2. Invocation of spiritual assistance: be it specific, (a guide, teacher, archangel, etc.,) or asking "God" or "The Universe" or "Higher Power" or whatever you choose to call it.
  3. Gratitude

4. Release all expectations. Always remember that "The best and highest good" might be other than your personal wishes.

5. "Just DO it!"

The Original Reiki Ideals
  • The secret art of inviting happiness.
  • The miraculous medicine for all diseases.
  • Just for today, do not be angry.
  • Do not worry.
  • Be filled with gratitude.
  • Devote yourself to your work and be kind to people.
  • Every morning and evening join your hands in prayer, and chant these words.
  • Use Reiki treatment for your body, mind, emotions, and spirit.
